Apprenticeships

The CWF Tax Administrative Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program provides a clear path to a career in tax preparation, combining hands-on experience with essential training. This program equips participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in tax preparation and administration while positively impacting their community’s financial health.

Training

Campaign for Working Families apprenticeship program includes a thorough curriculum that covers both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Apprentices receive guidance and mentorship from experienced tax professionals. Training encompasses:
  • In-depth understanding of tax law, forms, credits, and deductions;
  • Proficiency in using tax preparation software and equipment;
  • Development of strong communication skills for client interactions;
  • Call Center Agent skills; and 
  • Office administration skills.
Apprentices will earn IRS Basic and Advanced certifications, qualifying them for jobs in the tax and financial industry.

Hours and Compensation

The apprenticeship is a paid, full-time position at CWF Headquarters (935 N. 29th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130.). The program requires 2,000 hours of training and on-the-job experience (approximately one year). Apprentices will be paid for training and will receive a progressively increasing wage based on increased skills and competences gained.

Apprentices start at $15 per hour, with pay increasing as apprentice(s) gain skills and competence.

The apprenticeship lasts at least one year, or 2,000 hours, and includes training and work experience. Apprentices work Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

Training covers tax law, forms, credits, deductions, tax software, client communication, call center skills, and office administration. All training is paid and counts toward the 2,000-hour requirement.

Yes, apprentices must pass two IRS exams to earn Basic and Advanced Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) certifications. There is no fee for these exams.

 Yes, each apprentice has a supervisor and at least four experienced professionals available for support. Weekly meetings with the Director of Volunteer Engagement and Partnerships track progress and goals.

CWF will assist and support apprentices identify suitable career paths in the field

 Yes, apprentices will be considered for employment opportunities within the organization if available.
