Filing this year, even with unfiled returns from prior years, is almost always better than continued non-filing. Here is what you need to know.
Failing to file a tax return sets off a chain of federal and local consequences that grow more expensive with every passing month. Understanding what is at stake and what options exist is the first step toward resolving the situation.
After you complete the immediate steps listed in Part One, implement additional protections like the IRS Identity Protection PIN program. Knowing what to expect during resolution helps you stay organized.
Tax season arrives every year with questions, deadlines, and sometimes uncertainty. For many working families, filing taxes is not only about meeting a requirement. It is also an opportunity to claim credits, receive refunds, and access resources that support household stability.
Tax season can feel confusing, especially for working families, freelancers, side-hustle workers, and first-time filers. A helpful starting point is knowing that for most people, the federal deadline to file a 2025 tax return is April 15, 2026.
Tax-related identity theft is one of the most disruptive forms of fraud a taxpayer can experience. It occurs when someone uses your Social Security number, or your child's, to file a fraudulent return and claim a refund in your name. Victims typically discover the fraud only when they attempt to file their own return and receive an IRS notice stating that a return has already been submitted under their SSN.
